Zurich Opernhaus Announces New General Music Director & Ring Cycle

By David Salazar

Gianandrea Noseda has been named the next General Music Director of the Zurich Opernhaus.

The conductor will take over in 2020-21. His predecessor, Fabio Luisi, will actually be leaving his post a season early to allow the transition to be more comfortable for his fellow countryman.

“To me, Opernhaus Zürich is one of the world’s great theaters,” stated Noseda. “To be appointed the next General Music Director is a great honor… The artists of Opernhaus Zürich, from the orchestra to the chorus, singers to the ballet dancers, form one of the elite houses in the world. I look forward to joining Andreas and the entire Opernhaus staff in 2021.”

Regarding the programming he will lead, Noseda noted that the company will undertake the Ring Cycle and expand upon the German repertoire. The Ring Cycle, which will be spearheaded by artistic director Andreas Homoki, who will remain in his position until 2025, will be the first new production of the tetralogy for the company since 2002.
