Artistic Director Yuval Sharon to End Detroit Opera Tenure

By Francisco Salazar

Artistic Director Yuval Sharon is exiting the Detroit Opera.

According to reports, both parties have mutually agreed to end his contract as Artistic Director at the end of the 2025-6 season, rather than letting it run until 2028. As a result, the company’s Music Director Roberto Kalb will take on an expanded role in planning.

The news comes after the company had extended Sharon’s contract in July 2024 and had announced that the next three seasons would be dedicated to individual centerpieces.

It also comes as the company faces economic difficulties that forced it to cancel the opener of its 2025-26 season, “The Girl of the Golden West.” According to reports the company lost more than $3 million from 2023 to 2024 due to a number of factors, including a loss in government grants and public donations.

This season, Sharon is set to make his Metropolitan Opera debut directing “Tristan und Isolde” and will direct a new production of “The Ring Cycle” with the New York company.
