Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Etienne Dupuis & Nicole Car Among Stars Of Opéra de Montréal’s 2019-20 Season

The Opéra de Montréal has announced its 2019-20 season featuring five staged operas and an opera in concert version.

The season will open with Tchaïkovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” with real-life couple Etienne Dupuis and Nicole Car as Onegin and Tatiana. They will be accompanied by tenor Owen McCausland, mezzo Carolyn Sproule, bass Denis Sedov, mezzo Christiane Bélanger, with a guest appearance by Stefania Toczyska as Filipievna. French conductor Guillaume Tourniaire will be in the pit and Tomer Zvulun will stage the production.

Performance Dates: September 14-22, 2019.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin returns to the Opéra de Montreal to conduct his first performances of Beethoven’s “Fidelio,” in a concert version. The strong cast includes Norwegian soprano Lise Davidsen as Leonora, Michael Schade as Florestan, Raymond Aceto as Rocco, Luca Pisaroni as Pizarro, Kimy Mc Laren as Marzelline and Jean-Michel Richer as Jaquino.

Performance Dates: October 25 and 27, 2019.

Director Michael Cavanagh will stage a production of Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor” starring Russian soprano Albina Shagimuratova in the title role. Canadian ténor Frédéric Antoun, American baritone Lucas Meachem and bass Oleg Tsibulko round out the cast. Italian Fabrizio Ventura conducts.

Performance Dates: November 9-17, 2019.

George Benjamin’s “Written on Skin” will get its first Canadian performances, with Magali Simard-Galdès, Daniel Okulitch, Luigi Schifano, Florence Bourget and Jean-Michel Richer. Nicole Paiement conducts and Alain Gauthier directs.

Performance Dates: January 25-February 2, 2020.

Next will be a double bill of Poulenc’s “La Voix Humaine” and “L’hiver Attend Beaucoup de Moi,” a new creation of Canadian composer Laurence Jobidon. The cast includes France Bellemare, Florence Bourget, and Vanessa Croome. The production will be staged by Solene Paré.

Performance dates: March 19-28, 2020.

Barrie Kosky’s production of Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” from the Komische Oper Berlin will end the season. The cast includes Aaron Blake, Rachel Sterrenberg, Dominic Köninger, Olga Pudova, and Christian Zaremba. Christopher Allen conducts.

Performance dates: May 16-26, 2020.
