Xabier Anduaga, Saioa Hernández, Sonya Yoncheva, Anna Netrebko & Michael Fabiano Lead Teatro Real de Madrid’s 2021-22 Season

The Teatro Real de Madrid has announced its 2021-22 season which will feature repertoire from 17th century all the way to the 21 century. Here is a look at the new season.

The new season opens with Rossini’sLa Cenerentola in a production by Stefan Herheim. Riccardo Frizza conducts the opera which is set to star Karine Deshayes and Aigul Akhmetshina in the title role as well as Dmitry Korchak and Michele Angelini as the prince. The cast is rounded out by Florian Sempey, Borja Quiza, Renato Girolami, Nicola Alaimo, Roberto Tagliavini, and Roiccardo Fassi.

Performance Dates: Sept. 20-Oct. 9, 2021

Ricardo Llorca’s “Las horas vacías” gets a new production by José Luis Arellano García. The chamber opera will star soprano Sonia de Munck and Marta Poveda. Alexis Soriano conducts.

Performance Dates: Nov. 9-14, 2021

Ivor Bolton conducts Händel’s “Partenope” with a cast that includes Brenda Rae, Sabina Puértolas, Iestyn Davies, Franco Fagioli, Anthony Roth Constanzo, Jeremy Ovenen, Juan Sancho, Teresa Iervolino, Daniela Mack, Christopher Lowre, Nikolay Borchev, and Gabriel Bermúdez. Christopher Alden directs the acclaimed production.

Performance Dates: Nov. 13-23, 2021

Puccini’s La bohème returns with Nicola Luisotti conducting two-star casts. Ermonela Jaho and Michael Fabiano lead the first cast which also includes Lucas Meachem and Ruth Iniesta. Meanwhile, Eleonora Buratto and Andeka Gorrotxategi lead the second cast which includes Andrzej Filonczyk and Raquel Lojendio.

Pablo Heras-Casado conducts Götterdämmerung which concludes the comapny’s Ring Cycle of the past few seasons. Robert Carsen directs a cast that includes Andreas Schager, Ricarda Merbeth, Martin Winkler, Lauri Vasar, Amanda Majeski, Stephen Milling, and Michaela Schuster. Vicente Molina Foix and Luis de Pablo bring “El Abrecartes” the Teatro Real stage in a production by Xavier Albertí. Fabián Panisello conducts the work which will star Airam Hernández, Borja Quiza, José Antonio López, Antonio Lozano, Mikeldi Atxalandabaso, Jorge Rodríguez-Norton, Ana Ibarra, Vicenç Esteve, Gabriel Díaz, David Sánchez, and Laura Vila.

Performance Dates: Feb. 16-26, 2022

Leo Hussain conducts a concert version of Delibes’ “Lakmé” with Sabine Devieilhe singing the title role alongside Xabier Anduaga, Stéphane Degout, David Menéndez, Héloïse Mas, and Gerardo López.

Performance Dates: March 1 & 3, 2022

Ausrine Stundyte and Elena Popovskaya star in Prokofiev’s “The Fiery Angel.” The new production by Calixto Bieito will also star Leigh Melrose, Dimitris Tiliakos, Dmitry golovnin, and Vsevolod Grivnov. Gustavo Gimeno conducts.

Purcell’s “King Arthur” will be performed in concert form with a cast that includes Sophie Junkerm, Zsuzsi Tóth, Caroline Weynants, Viola Blache, Jan Kullman, Alexander Chance, Helene Erben, David Feldmann, Robert Buckland, Jacob Lawrence, Hugo Hymas, Rory Carver, Sebastian Myrus, Marcus Farnsworth, Lorant Najbauer, and Lionel Meunier. The Vox Luminis is led by Lionel Meunier.

Performance Date: March 27, 2022

The Teatro Real will give the world premiere of “Extinción: Misa de Batalla y Misa pro defunctis” by Joan Cererols. Agrupación Señor Serrano and the Ensemble Nereydas will be conducted by Javier Ulises Illán. Àlex Serrano and Pau Palacios direct.

Performance Dates: April 12-24, 2022

Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro will be conducted by Ivor Bolton in a new production by Lotte de Beer. The opera will star André Schuen, Joan Martín-Royo, María José Moreno, Miren Urbieta-Vega, Julie Fuchs, Elena Sancho Pereg, Vito Priante, Thomas Oliemans, Rachel Wilson, and Maite Beaumont.

Performance Dates: April 22-May 12, 2022

Sonya Yoncheva sings concert performances of Giordano’s “Siberia.” Domingo Hindoyan conducts the rarely performed work which will also star Bryan Hymel, Elena Zilio, Mercedes Gancedo, and George Petean.

Performance Dates: May 6 & 9, 2022

The company will perform a double with Debussy’s “La damoiselle élue” and  Honegger’s “Joan of Arc.” Àlex Ollé directs the production which will star Irene Escolar, Sébastien Dutrieux, Sylvia Schwartz, Elena Copons, Aude Extrémo, Charles Workman, Torben Jügens, and Camilla Tilling. Juanjo Mena conducts.

Performance Dates: June 7-June 17, 2022

The Teatro Real will show the world premiere of “El nacimiento del Rey Sol” featuring music by Cavalli, Rossi, Lambert, Constantin, Boësset, and De Cambefort. Sébastien Daucé conducts the production which will star Lucile Richardot, Caroline Weynants, Caroline Dangin-Bardot, Perrine Devillers, and Deborah Cachet.

Performance Date: June 19, 2022

Nicola Luisotti conducts Verdi’sNabucco with Anna Pirozzi and Saioa Hernández singing the role of Abigaille and Amartuvshin Enkhbat, George Petean, and Luis Cansino sharing the title role. The cast is rounded out by Piero Pretti, Eduardo Aladrén, Dmitry Belosselsky, Roberto Tagliavini, Alexander Vinogradov, Silvia Tro Santafé, Elena Maximova, and Daniela Mack. Nicola Luisotti and Jordi Bernacer conduct the new production by Andreas Homoki.

Rufus Wainwright’s “Hadrian” makes its Spanish debut in a semi-staged production. Scott Dunn conducts the new work.

Lisette Oropesa and Corrado Rovaris join forces for a Bel Canto evening of arias from “Guillaume Tell,” “Le siège de Corinthe,” “Le Comte Ory,” “Les Martyrs,” “Lucie de Lammermoor,” “La favorite,” and “la Fille du Régiment.”
