Xabier Anduaga, Ekaterina Bakanova & Christopher Ventris Highlight Teatro Nacional De São Carlos, Lisboa’s 2019-20 Season

The season will start off with Welsh National Opera’s production of Verdi’s “La Forza del Destino,” directed by David Pountney. The cast will feature Miklós Sebestyén as the Marquis of Calatrava / Il Padre Guardiano, Cristiana Oliveira / Julianna Di Giacomo as Leonora, Damiano Salerno as Don Carlo di Vargas, Kristian Benedikt / Paulo Ferreira as Don Alvaro, Cátia Moreso as Preziosilla / Curra, Luís Rodrigues as Fra Melitone, João Merino as Mayor / Surgeon, and Carlos Guilherme as Trabuco. They will be joined by the Coro do Teatro Nacional de São Carlos and the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa, led by Antonio Pirolli.
Performance Dates: Oct. 10 – 26, 2019
Jane Glover will lead a concert performance of Gluck’s “Orfeo ed Euridice” in a centenary celebration of Portuguese poet and writer Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen. Renata Pokupić and Eduarda Melo will star in the title roles, alongside Sandra Medeiros as Amore.
Performance Date: Nov. 6, 2019
Teatro dell’Opera di Roma’s production of Donizetti’s “Maria Stuarda,” directed by Andrea de Rosa, will star Ekaterina Bakanova in the title role alongside Alessandra Volpe as Elisabetta, Leonardo Cortellazzi as Roberto, Luis Rodrigues as Talbot, Christian Luján as Cecil, and Rita Marques as Anna Kennedy. Fabrizio Maria Carminati will conduct.
Performance Dates: Jan. 25 – Feb. 2, 2020
Graeme Jenkins will lead Opera North’s semi-staged concert version of Wagner’s “Die Walküre,” directed by Peter Mumford. The cast will include Christopher Ventris as Siegmund, Ruxandra Donose as Sieglinde, Joshua Bloom as Hunding, Thomas Johannes Mayer as Wotan, Siphiwe Mckenzie as Helmwige, Sónia Alcobaça as Waltraute, Maria Luisa de Freitas as Schwertleite, Lourdes Martins as Ortlinde, Ana Ester Neves as Siegrune, Paula Dória as Grimgerde, and Patricia Quinta as Rossweisse. Brünnhilde is TBA.

Luca Aprea will direct a new semi-staged production of Joly Braga Santos’ “Trilogia das Barcas.” The cast will feature Luis Rodrigues as Diabo, Mário Redondo as Companheiro do Diabo, Maria Luísa de Freitas as Florenca / Marta Gil, Cátia Moreso as Brizida Vaz / Morte, Marco Alves dos Santos as Fidalgo / Conde, João Terleira as Parvo / Bispo, João Merino as Onzeneiro / Rei, Ricardo Panela as Sapateiro / Imperador, Diogo Oliveira as Corregedor / Arcebispo, Tiago Matos as Enforcado / Duque, and André Henriques as Procurador / Lavrador / Papa. Joana Carneiro will conduct.
Performance Dates: Apr. 3 & 5, 2020
Andrea Sanguineti will conduct Croatian National Theatre’s production of Puccini’s “La Boheme,” directed by Arnaud Bernard. Natalia Tanasii and Susana Gaspar will star as Mimì, alongside Carlos Cardoso and Luís Gomes as Rodolfo. They will be joined by Bárbara Barradas as Musetta, Christian Luján as Marcello, Diogo Oliveira as Schaunard, André Henriques as Colline, and Mário Redondo as Benoît / Alcindoro.
Performance Dates: May 4 – 10, 2020
James Bonas will direct a new production of Rossini’s “Le Comte Ory.” The cast will feature Xabier Anduaga in the title role, alongside Sofia Fomina as La Comtesse, Filipa Van Eck as Alice, Cátia Moreso as Dame Ragonde, and André Henriques as Raimbaud. Isolier is TBA. Giuliano Carella will conduct.
