The Bergen International Festival has named William Kentridge the Artist in Residence for the 2025 season.

The festival announced that Festival Director Lars Petter Hagen invited two of the South African artist’s stage productions to Bergen.

The Bergen International Festival 2025 will open with Kentridge’s latest performance, “The Great Yes, The Great No,” which had its world premiere this past summer and will showcase the animated film “In Oh To Believe in Another World” featuring the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra perform Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony.

In a statement, Hagen said, “In a poetic, beautiful, and surreal universe, William Kentridge addresses central themes of our time while connecting with history. It is time for the Norwegian audience to experience this significant body of work on the big stage.”

Kentridge has directed several opera productions including “Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria,” “Die Zauberflöte,” “The Nose,” “Lulu,” and “Wozzeck.” In 2023, Kentridge received the Laurence Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Opera for his production of ‘Sybil’ at the Barbican Theatre, in London.
