The Wiener Staatsoper has extended its General Director Bogdan Roščić until 2030.

State Secretary Andrea Mayer announced on the news on June 13. Roščić was originally set to be the director until 2025 but Mayer followed the recommendation of the selection committee after the end of the new call for applications, to which a total of eleven people had applied.

In a statement, Mayer said, “the renewal of the director’s contract, strengthens the position of the house as an internationally leading opera stage.” She added, “He succeeded in making the Wiener Staatsoper visible and visible far beyond national borders in a time characterized by restrictions and uncertainties to keep audible.”

For his part, Roščić said, “I accept the challenge of directing the State Opera until 2030 because I have a clear idea of where it has to go in this extraordinary time. Directing this opera is not a ‘job’ that you keep as long as possible. Rather, it always has to do with the question of whether one can give the institution what it needs at a certain moment. I hope that my answer to this can stand before this great responsibility.”

Roščić has been General Director for the Wiener Staatsoper since 2020.
