The Wiener Staatsoper has announced that it has canceled all performances until at least Jan. 28, 2021.

The opera house stated that this decision was the result of the latest order from the Austrian federal government, which banned performances in theatres and opera houses up to that date.

Austria has extended its hard lockdown until at least Jan. 24. The situation undoubtedly affected opera houses, which face a challenging time finding behind-the-scenes workers or musicians to engage in preparations for productions.

Presentations at the Wiener Staatsoper are scheduled to resume on Jan. 30 with a production of Mozart’s “Le Nozze Di Figaro,” with Andrè Schuen, Federica Lombardi, Louise Alder, Philippe Sly, and Virginie Verrez. Philippe Jordan is signed on to conduct the production by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle.
