Wiener Staatsoper Announces Cast Change for ‘Turandot’

The Wiener Staatsoper has announced a conductor change for its new production of “Turandot.”

The company said that Marco Armiliato will take over the run of performances for Franz Welser-Möst who recently announced he was canceling engagements due to illness.

The Italian conductor is one of the most sought-after opera conductors in the world. In recent years he has conducted productions of “Samson et Dalila” and “Il Trovatore” at the Wiener Staatsoper. He is well-known for his Italian and French repertoire and has conducted works by such composers as Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Puccini, Mascagni, Leoncavallo, Giordano, Gounod, and Massenet.

“Turandot” is set to star Asmik Grigorian, Jonas Kaufmann, and Kristina Mkhitaryan. The production opens on Dec. 7, 2023.
