Wiener Staatsoper Announces Cast Change for ‘Le Grand Macabre’

The Wiener Staatsoper has announced a cast change for its upcoming production of Ligeti’s “Le Grand Macabre.”

The company said that Andrew Watts will sing the role of Fürst Go-Go replacing the originally announced Xavier Sabata.

Watts is a countertenor who has performed at the e Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Glyndebourne Festival, Teatro alla Scala, Teatro La Fenice, Staatsoper Berlin, Opera de Lyon, Staatsoper Hamburg, Opéra national de Paris, Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Bayerische Staatsoper Munich and Teatro Real Madrid.

Watts joins a cast that includes Georg Nigl, Sarah Aristidou, Maria Nazarova, Isabel Signoret, Wolfgang Bankl, Marina Prudenskaya, Gerhard Siegel, Daniel Jenz, and Hans Peter Kammerer. Pablo Heras-Casado conducts the new production by Jan Lauwers.

“Le Grand Macabre” is set to open on Nov. 11 through Nov. 23, 2023.
