Wiener Staatsoper Announces Cast Change for ‘La Fille du Régiment’

By Francisco Salazar

Juan Diego Flórez has canceled his third performance of “La Fille du Régiment” on Dec. 30 at the Wiener Staatsoper.

In a statement, the tenor said, “Due to a persistent cold, unfortunately, I will not be able to sing the third performance of ‘La Fille du Régiment’ at the Wiener Staatsoper on Dec 30th. Thank you very much for your understanding.”

The Staatsoper also noted that he “sang the first two performances of the current, completely sold-out series of ‘La Fille du régiment.’ However, on the advice of his doctor, he has to cancel tomorrow’s performance in order to secure his appearance in the final performance of the series on January 2.”

As a result, tenor Marco Ciaponi will take over the role of Tonio. The tenor has previously appeared as Nemorino in “L’Elisir d’Amore,” Don Ottavio in “Don Giovanni,” and the Duke of Mantua in “Rigoletto” in numerous Italian houses, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Sempoper Dresden, and the Nationale Opera Amsterdam.

He joins a cast that includes Pretty Yende, Stephanie Houtzeel, and Adrian Eröd. Michele Spotti conducts the production by Laurent Pelly.

The Wiener Staatsoper also announced the cancelation of the planned live stream for “La Fille du Régiment” due to the last-minute change and the resulting insufficient preparation time. As a result, the company will present “La bohème” on Jan. 14, 2023 from a performance in September starring Anna Netrebko, Vittorio Grigolo, and Günther Groissböck.
