Wiener Staatsoper Announces Cast Change for ‘Il Turco in Italia’

By Francisco Salazar

The Wiener Staatsoper has announced a cast change for its production of “Il Turco in Italia.”

The company noted that Ildebrando D’Arcangelo will replace Ildar Abdrazakov in the role of Selim. Additionally, Abdrazakov will no longer sing in the Rossini-Gala on July 8.

This is the latest cancelation for Abdrazakov as early this year announced he would cancel his role debut of Scarpia due to his mother’s illness. He said, “Unfortunately, my mother is unwell and I need to spend time with her and get her the care she needs.” He later canceled Vienna’s production of “Boris Godunov” and a new production of “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” at the Salzburg Whitsun Festival. He has however performed regularly at the Mariinsky Theatre and in Russia throughout these past months.

“Il Turco in Italia” is set to open on July 3 and will star Cecilia Bartoli, Nicola Alaimo, Barry Banks, and Giovanni Romeo. Gianluca Capuano conducts the production by Jean-Louis Grinda.
