Wiener Staatsoper Announces Cast Change for ‘Il Barbiere di Siviglia’

The Wiener Staatsoper has announced that Paolo Rumetz will be singing the Jan. 7 and 10 performances of Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia,” taking over for Wolfgang Bankl.

Rumetz, who will take on the role of Don Bartolo, will join a cast led by Pavel Kolgatin as Almaviva, Tara Erraught as Rosina, Adam Plachetka as Figaro, and Jongmin park as Don Basilio. Guillermo García Calvo will conduct.

In addition to the two performances of “Barbiere,” Rumetz is set to appear in the company’s production of “L’Italiana in Algeri” on April 17, 2020. The baritone is a Vienna State Opera fixture with other performances this season including Sharpless in “Madama Butterfly,” Dulcamara in “L’Elisir d’Amore,” and Il Conte di Luna in “Il Trovatore.” Last season, he appeared in such operas as “La Centerentola,” “Cavalleria Rusticana,” and “Il Barbiere di Siviglia,” among others.

Bankl is set to appear in “Arabella” at Oper Leipzig as well as “Cardillac” and “Arabella” at the Wiener Staatsoper.
