The Wiener Staatsoper has announced a cast change for its upcoming performances of Verdi’s “Don Carlo.”

The company noted that Ekaterina Gubanova will sing the role of Eboli in the upcoming revival replacing Anita Rachvelishvili, who is pregnant.

Gubanova has performed the role of Eboli around the world at such companies as the Mariinsky Theatre, Metropolitan Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Bolshoi Theatre, and Greek National Opera. The mezzo is well known for her Verdi, Wagner, and Verismo roles.

Gubanova will join a cast that includes Ain Anger, Fabio Sartori, Boris Pinkhasovich, Dmitry Ulyanov, and Asmik Grigorian. Franz Welser-Möst conducts the production by Daniele Abbado.

“Don Carlo” opens Dec. 16 and runs through Dec. 25, 2021. Rachvelishvili is set to return to the stage in January for performances at the Opera de Paris.
