The Wiener Staatsoper has announced a cast change for the June 9, 2021 performance of Bizet‘s “Carmen.”

The company announced that Gábor Bretz will perform the role of Escamillo, replacing Erwin Schrott.

Bretz will join a cast that includes Vera-Lotte Boecker as Micaëla, Dmytro Popov as Don José, and Elena Maximova in the title role. Alexander Soddy conducts the production by Calixto Bieito.

Bretz is a well known bass who has performed at the Royal Opera House, Dutch National Opera, and Teatro alla Scala. He will also perform the role of Escamillo in “Carmen” at the Hungarian State Opera between June 25 and 27, 2021 and is slated to sing the role of Don Pizarro in “Fidelio” in September and October 2021 at the Opéra Comique in Paris alongside Siobhan Stagg and Michael Spyres.
