Weekend Preview – International (7/21-23): Sonya Yoncheva, Placido Domingo & Jonas Kaufmann Headline Opera Festivals

Many of the great opera houses around the world are now closed but festival season is beginning with many of the most renowned singers headlining new productions.

Argentina 

Robert Carsen’s “Der Rosenkavalier” continues its run at the Teatro Colón.

Austria 

The Salzburg Festival kicks off with the final performance of Opera Camp, Jedermann.

At the Bregenzer Festival Rossini’s “Moses in Eygpt” will continue its run with Enrique Mazzola conducting while Bizet’s “Carmen” will also be performed with two casts featuring Gaëlle Arquez and Lena Belkina in the title role.

France 

In Montpelier, Sonya Yoncheva adds another role to her repertoire, performing a concert version of Giordano’s “Siberia” while at the Festival d’Aix-En Provence, Mozart’s “Don Giovanni” comes to an end with Isabel Leonard and Eleonora Buratto in starring roles. Cavalli’s “Erismena” also comes to an end at the festival.

Germany 

The Munich Opera Festival continues Rossini’s “Semiramide” starring Joyce DiDonato and Weber’s “Oberon.” The festival will also show Shostakovich’s “Lady Macbeth of Mtsenk” with Anja Kampe. Jonas Kaufmann and Anja Harteros conclude the weekend with “La Forza del Destino.”

Italy

“Madama Butterfly” opens at the Macerata Festival with María José Siri in the title role. Iréne Theorin takes on the title role of Puccini’s ‘Turandot” alongside Davinia Rodriguez at the festival.

The Arena di Verona continues its festival with Plácido Domingo’s Antologia de Zarzuela and Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” with Oksana Dyka in the title role and Marcello Giordani. The weekend concludes with “Aida” featuring Irina Churilova and Carlo Ventre.

Russia 

The Mariinsky Theatre will showcase Cilea’s “Adriana Lecouvreur,” Rimsky Korsakov’s “The Golden Cockerel,” Bizet’s “Carmen,” and Tchaikovsky’s “Iolanta.”

Spain 

The Liceu’s run of Verdi’s “Il Trovatore” continues with Tamara Wilson and Kristen Lewis as well as Marco Berti and Piero Pretti.

The Teatro Real closes its 2016-17 season with a final performance of “Madama Butterfly” with Eromenela Jaho in the title role.

Switzerland 

The Verbier Festival showcases Strauss’ “Salome” starring Gun-Brit Barkmin in the title role. The opera will be streamed on Medici.tv.
