Weekend Preview – International (4/21- 23): Gregory Kunde And Maria Jose Siri Headline New ‘Andrea Chenier’

Another weekend, more opera performances around the world. Here are the big highlights.

Austria 

The weekend kicks off at the Vienna state Opera with Janacek’s “Katya Kabanova” starring  Dan Paul Dumitrescu, Misha Didyk, Jane Henschel, Leonardo Navarro and Angela Denoke. It will be followed by Shostakovich’s “Lady Macbeth of Mtsenk” with Wolfgang Bankl, Eva-Maria Westbroek and Brandon Jovanovich. The weekend concludes with Verdi’s “Un Ballo in Maschera” with Piotr Beczala, George Petean and Kristin Lewis.

Czech Republic 

The Prague National theater presents Petr Kofroň’s “Krakatit,” Carl Orff’s “Die Kluge / Der Mond” and Donizetti’s “Viva la Mama.”

France

The Paris National Opera presents Rimsky-Korsakov’s “The Snowmaiden” with Aida Garifullina and Martina Serafin in the lead roles.

Germany 

Petra Lang and Stefan Vinke star in the Bayerische Staatsoper‘s revival of Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde” alongside René Pape. The theater will also present Donizetti’s “Roberto Devereux” with Edita Gruberova.

The Staatsoper Berlin will showcase Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” with Ildebrando D’Arcangelo, Dorothea Röschmann, Anna Prohaska, Lauri Vasar and Marianne Crebassa. The company will also present “Die Zauberflote” with Peter Sonn, Evelin Novak, Narine Yeghiyan, René Pape, Nicola Proksch and Arttu Kataja.

The Hamburg State Opera will present Poulenc’s “Dialogues des Carmelites” while the Frankfurt Opera will show Stravinsky’s “The Rake’s Progress” and Verdi’s “Rigoletto.”

Patrizia Ciofi stars in Verdi’s “La Traviata” at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” and Britten’s “Death in Venice” will also be shown.

Italy 

The Teatro alla Scala will specialize in the bel canto repertoire with Donizetti’s “Anna Bolena” with Hibla Gerzmava and Rossini’s “La Gazza Ladra” with rising star Rosa Feola.

Giordano’s “Andrea Chénier” opens in a new production by Marco Bellocchio with a starry cast that includes Gregory Kunde in his role debut in the title role and Maria José Siri as Maddalena.

At La Fenice Nadine Sierra, who recently won the Richard Tucker Award, stars in the title role of Donizetti’s “Lucia di Lammermoor.” She alternates with Zuzana Marková.

Monaco

The Monte Carlo Opera opens a new production of Verdi’s “Il Trovatore” with Maria Agresta, Francesco Meli, Marina Prudenskaya and Nicola Alaimo. Daniel Harding conducts the production by Francisco Negrin.

Russia 

The Bolshoi Theatre will present a production of George Benjamin’s “Written on Skin” while the Mariinsky Theater will show Donizetti’s ‘L’Elisir d’Amore,” Glinka’s “Ruslan and Lyudmila” and Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci.”

United Kingdom

Ana María Martinez takes on the role of Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” at the Royal Opera House
