Watch Clémentine Margaine & Roberto Alagna in ‘Carmen’ on PBS

By David Salazar

Bizet’s “Carmen” will be presented by PBS as part of its Great Performances from the Metropolitan Opera on Sunday, June 16, 2019 at 12 p.m. (those in New York will see the broadcast at 1 p.m.).

The opera features Clémentine Margaine in a role that she has dominated around the world. She is joined by Roberto Alagna, one of the great Don José interpreters of his time, and Aleksandra Kurzak as Micaëla. Rounding out the cast as Escamillo is Alexander Vinogradov. Soprano Ailyn Pérez hosted the broadcast and Louis Langrée conducts.

Of Margaine’s performance at the Met last season, OperaWire’s Logan Martell noted “In the title role, Clémentine Margaine was a seductive firebrand. From her entrance in Act one, her expressions and gestures were charged with a tension well-suited to the timeless man-eater, and a number of dramatic and musical directions seemed to emphasize Margaine’s seductive quality.”
