Washington National Opera to Perform ‘Porgy and Bess’
By Francisco SalazarThe Washington National Opera is set to present “Porgy and Bess” in Artistic Director Francesca Zambello’s acclaimed production.
Zambello’s production was first seen on the Kennedy Center stage in the 2005–2006 season and the return marks the 90th anniversary of this work. In a statement, Zambello said, “It is hard to believe it’s been 20 years since I first directed Porgy and Bess. During the two decades since, the world around us has continued to change as I traveled with our production to Chicago, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Cooperstown, and San Francisco, and each time, in each place we found something new in the lives of these characters that seemed to mirror what we were experiencing in real life.”
Kwamé Ryan will conduct the opera, which will star Brittany Renee, Alyson Cambridge, Michael Sumuel, Reginald Smith, Jr., Viviana Goodwin, Amber R. Monroe, Denyce Graves, Chauncey Packer, Kenneth Kellogg, and Norman Garrett.
“Porgy and Bess” will be performed between May 23 and 31, 2025.
