Washington National Opera To Celebrate Holidays With ‘The Lion, the Unicorn, and Me’

By Francisco Salazar

The Washington National Opera will continue its annual holiday family opera tradition with “The Lion, the Unicorn, and Me.”

The opera, based on Jeanette Winterson’s award-winning children’s book which tells the Nativity story from the donkey’s point of view, features music by composer Jeanine Tesori and a libretto by J.D. “Sandy” McClatchy.

It will feature current and former members of WNO’s Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program, including Soloman Howard, Alexandra Nowakowski, Alexander McKissick, Hannah Hagerty, Joshua Conyers, Marlen Nahhas, Eliza Bonet, Joshua Blue, Samson McCrady, and Samuel Weiser. The production will be directed by Francesca Zambello and will be conducted by James Lowe.

Prior to each performance, there will be a “touch cart” in the lobby that will allow audience members the opportunity to feel and be exposed to costumes and props featured in the opera. There will also be a meet-and-greet with photo opportunities featuring some of the characters in costume.

The production will be performed from Dec. 14 through the 16, 2018 at the Kennedy Center Terrace Theater.
