Washington National Opera Release Virtual Performance of ‘Madama Butterfly’ Chorus

By Francisco Salazar

The Washington National Opera has released a virtual performance of “The Humming Chorus” from Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly”

The choral passage was performed by members of the Washington National Opera Orchestra and the Chorus and Cafritz Young Artists.

The showcase is led by Evan Rogister, principal conductor of the Washington National Opera and depicts the “hopeful emotional state of Butterfly holding vigil, waiting for her naval officer husband to return…waiting and refusing to give up. It is very much like all of America and the world in this current Pandemic as they wait to return to performing.”

The Washington National Opera is the latest arts organization to record a virtual performance. The Metropolitan Opera, the Festival Napa Valley, and Festival Puccini are among the organizations to release similar musical feats.
