VOCES8 Foundation Announces ‘LIVE From London Easter’ Concerts and World Premiere Recording

By Chris Ruel

VOCES8 Foundation has announced two “LIVE From London” online concerts slated for Eastertide and the release of a world premiere album, “Requiem Novum.”

First up is the Mar. 25, 2022 release of “Requiem Novum,” composed by Mårten Jansson and performed by soprano Anna Dennis, VOCES8 Foundation Choir, and the Philharmonia Orchestra under the baton of Barnaby Smith. A single, “Sanctus,” drops on Mar. 5, giving listeners a foretaste of the complete recording.

On Apr. 14, Maundy Thursday, the “LIVE From London” series continues with a performance of “The Sacred Veil” by composer Eric Whitacre. The concert features VOCES8, pianist Christopher Glynn, and cellist Emma Denton. Whitacre’s composition examines pain and loss through the words of Julia Lawrence Silvestri (who died tragically in 2005), her poet/lyricist husband, Charles Anthony Silvestri, and Whitacre, a friend of the couple. The performance was filmed at VOCES8 Centre and is a condensed version of the work presented initially in Los Angeles in 2019.

On Easter Sunday, Apr. 17, “LIVE From London” presents the UK premiere of Jansson’s “Requiem Novum,” filmed at All Hallows’, Gospel Oak, London. The composer’s “Response of Hope and Wonder” incorporates the poems of Charles Anthony Silvestri within the traditional Requiem Mass. The concert features the same contingent of artists as the album.
