Virginia Opera Unveils 2023-24 Season

Virginia Opera has announced its 2023-24 season.

“Our new season is about giving audiences—old and new—an opportunity to hear fresh voices,” said Peggy Kriha Dye, General Director and CEO of Virginia Opera, in an official press release issued by the company. “Whether the opera is an established classic or new to Virginia, each work offers a different perspective on this fantastic art form.”

First up is Wagner’s “Siegfried” in an orchestral version by Jonathan Dove with an adaptation by Dove and Graham Vick. The opera will star Kyle Albertson, Ricardo Lugo, Alexandra Loutsion, Joshua Jeremiah, Cooper Nolan, Matthew Peña, Alissa Anderson, and Alicia Russell Tagert. Adam Turner conducts. 

Performance Dates: Sept. 29 & Oct. 1, 2023 (Norfolk); Oct. 7 & 8, 2023 (Fairfax); Oct. 13 & 15, 2023 (Richmond)

Next up is “The Barber of Seville.” The opera will star Hilary Ginther, Jordan Costa, Markel Reed, Erik Grendahl, Aaron Crouch, Adelmo Guidarelli, Christian Pursell, Alexander Kapp, and Emily Harmon. Brandon Eldredge conducts and Nora Winsler directs.

Performance Dates: Nov. 3 – 5, 2023 (Norfolk); Nov. 11 & 12, 2023 (Fairfax); Nov. 17 & 19, 2023 (Richmond)

That will be followed up by Paul Moravec and Mark Campbell’s “Sanctuary Road.” Dr. Everett McCorvey conducts a cast starring Damien Geter, Laquita Mitchell, Krysty Swann, Terrence Chin-Loy, and Adam Richardson. 

Performance Dates: Jan. 26 & 28, 2024 (Norfolk); Feb. 3 & 4, 2024 (Fairfax); Feb. 9 & 11, 2024 (Richmond)

Closing out the season will be “Madama Butterfly.” Karen Chia-Ling Ho stars in the title role alongside Kristen Choi, Jonathan Burton, and Grant Youngblood. Mo Zhou directs. 

Performance Dates: March 8 -10, 2024 (Norfolk); March 16 & 17, 2024 (Fairfax); March 22 & 24, 2024 (Richmond)
