‘Vireo,’ Featuring Deborah Voigt, Getting DVD & CD Release

By David Salazar

Composer Lisa Bielawa, librettist Erik Ehn, and video director Charles Otte’s “Vireo” will receive a DVD and CD release.

The episodic opera, which was ready-made for the binging habits of modern audiences, will be released via Orange Mountain Music on Feb. 28, 2019; however, those with interest in getting a headstart on the experience can go to Apple Music and watch it right now.

The opera consists of 12 episodes and was first broadcast in June 2017. Biewlawa, who composed the music of the opera, received a 2018 Los Angeles Area Emmy nomination for her work, as did Charles Otte, the director of the video. The opera also won the 2015 ASCAP Foundation Deems Taylor / Virgil Thomas Multimedia Award.

“Viero” was shot on location at the New York Hudson River Valley and California’s Redwood Forests. The work was produced between Feb. 2015 and Jan. 2017. It starred Deborah Voigt, Laurie Rubin, Maria Lazarova, and Kirsten Sollek, among others.

“Vireo Live” is currently being developed and will be workshopped in 2020 at The New School’s Philip Glass Institute.
