Viktor Ullmann’s ‘The Broken Jug’ and ‘Emperor of Atlantis’ at National Moravian-Silesian Theatre

By Afton Wooten

The National Moravian-Silesian Theatre will present a double bill of Viktor Ullmann’s “The Broken Jug” and “Emperor of Atlantis” in part of its Terezín Opera Cycle.

Both title roles will be performed by Boris Prýgl. Rocc serves as stage director and set designer. Jakub Klecker and Maroš Potokár will share the podium. The costumes were designed by Belinda Radulović.

“The sets in both operas are mostly spare and simple and complemented by striking elements or video projections, which suitably underscore the storylines. Despite the difficult subject and fate, the composer believed in hope, in humanity. Both operas are thus not only a mirror of human society but also give hope that the future can be better and brighter” says Rocc in an official press release.

Performances of “The Broken Jug” and “Emperor of Atlantis” will take place at the Antonín Dvořák Theatre on Feb. 16 and 18 beginning at 6:30 p.m. More performances will follow through May.
