Victorian Opera to Present ‘Candide’

The Victorian Opera is set to present Bernstein’s “Candide” as the company’s first production of 2024.

The piece will be performed three times from Feb. 8 to 10, 2024 at St Kilda’s Palais Theatre.

The production is led by the multi-talented and Tony-nominated composer of Beetlejuice and star of Offspring, Eddie Perfect and Lyndon Watts, the award-winning breakout star of Hamilton. They will be joined by Katherine Allen, Maria Mercedes, Euan Fistrovic Doidge, Melanie Bird, Eddie Muliaumaseali’i, Alexander Lewis, and Troy Sussmanlaughter.

Dean Bryant will direct the work with Set and Costume Designer Dann Barber and Lighting Designer Matt Scott. Benjamin Northey conducts.

In a statement, Artistic Director Stuart Maunder AM said: “Candide is a glorious roller coaster of a show that continues to explore challenging themes with dazzling energy. With a world-class ensemble cast, brilliant creative team, magnificent design and Orchestra Victoria on stage, we’ve crafted a production that captures the essence of Voltaire’s wit and satire while celebrating the power of love and resilience. A vaudeville extravaganza!’.”
