Staatsoper Unter den Linden has announced the upcoming big premiere of Peter Eötvös’s opera “Sleepless.”

The work has been co-commissioned by the Staatsoper Unter den Linden and Grand Théâtre de Genève. The libretto was written by Mari Mezei, based on “Trilogy” by the Norwegian author Jon Fosse.

“I decided very early on to view this story as a ballad,” said Peter Eötvös. “Also for the reason that Fosse did not determine in which century the story takes place. It could be set in the past, the present, or the future. For me, the ballad as a genre also means this independent view of time and that creates a different sound. A ballad is basically told. In the musical material of the orchestra you can hear all the time that I’m telling something,” added Eötvös.

The cast for the opera includes Victoria Randem as Alida; Linard Vrielink as Asle; and Katharina Kammerloher as Mother and Midwife. The cast also includes Hanna Schwarz, Sarah Defrise, Jan Martiník, Tómas Tómasson, Roman Trekel, Siyabonga Maqungo, Arttu Kataja, Samantha Britt, Alexandra Ionis, Rowan Hellier, Kristín Anna Guðmundsdóttir, Kirsten-Josefine Grützmacher, Alexandra Yangel, Matthew Peña, Sotiris Charalampous, Fermin Basterra, Jaka Mihelač, Rory Green, and Jonas Böhm.

The composer conducts a production by Kornél Mundruczó, with dramaturgy by Jana Beckmann and Kata Wéber.

The run of “Sleepless” will begin on Nov. 28 and will end on Dec. 16, 2021.
