Véronique Gens, Sophie Koch, Roderick Williams & Lionel Lhote Lead Festival Berlioz 2021

The Festival Berlioz has announced its 2021 edition that is set to take place from August 19 until August 30.

For the purpose of this article, we will focus only on vocal performances.

Mezzo-soprano Sophie Koch performs works by Hector Berlioz alongside Pascal Rophé, who conducts the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire.

Performance date: Aug. 19, 2021

Mezzo-soprano Véronique Gens will present works by Berlioz, Erlanger, Bonis, Schmitt, Massenet and Richard Strauss in concert. David Reiland conducts the Orchestre national de Metz.

Performance date: Aug. 20, 2021

A concert version of Händel‘s oratorio “Israel in Egypt” spotlights Florie Valiquette, Chantal Santon-Jeffery, Ambroisine Bré, Kresimir Spicer, Andreas Wolf, and Tomislav Lavoie. Hervé Niquet conducts.

Performance date: Aug. 21, 2021

The third, fourth, and fifth Act of Berlioz’s opera “Les Troyens” will star Isabelle Druet in the role of Didon and Mirko Roschkowski as Énée. The cast is rounded out by Delphine Haidan, Vincent Le Texier, Julien Dran, François Lis, Héloïse Mas, François Rougier, Thomas Dolié, and Damien Pass. François-Xavier Roth conducts the Jeune Orchestre Européen Hector Berlioz – Isère.

Mathias Vidal and Vincent Le Texier perform works by Hector Berlioz. Jérémie Rhorer conducts Le Cercle de l’Harmonie.

Performance date: Aug. 24, 2021

Berlioz’s oratorio “L’enfance du Christ” showcases Jean Teitgen, Christine Rice, Roderick Williams, and Cyrille Dubois. John Nelson conducts the Orchestre national de Lyon.

Performance date: Aug. 25, 2021

Valery Gergiev conducts a performance of Berlioz’s “La Damnation de Faust” with soloists yet to be announced.

Performance date: Aug. 26, 2021

Tenor Alexander Mikhailov will sing Berlioz’s “Requiem” with Valery Gergiev conducting.

Performance date: Aug. 27, 2021

Berlioz’s “Nuits d’été” will star tenor Cyrille Dubois, mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre, and baritone Lionel Lhote. Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducts the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique and Monteverdi Choir.

Performance date: Aug. 28, 2021

Soprano Sara Gouzy, mezzo-soprano Laila Salome Fischer, tenor Mingjie Lei, and baritone Manuel Domenic Walser will perform works by Franz Schubert and Ludwig van Beethoven. Jordi Savall conducts.

Performance date: Aug. 29, 2021

Soprano Sophie Karthäuser and tenor Stanislas de Barbeyrac present works by Berlioz, Beethoven, Reicha, Rietz, Hensel-Mendelssohn, and von Weber. Laurence Equilbey conducts.
