Veronica Cangemi & Juan Sancho to Perform at Mariinsky Theatre During War in Ukraine
By Francisco SalazarMore artists continue to return to Russia to perform at the Mariinsky Theatre in the midst of the war on Ukraine.
This time Argentine Veronica Cangemi and Spanish tenor Juan Sancho are performing “Tamerlano” on June 4, 2026 making her debut with the company.
In a statement Cangemi said she was “excited to perform at the theater” and lauded the technology and theater. She also praised her colleagues with whom she will be performing alongside, including Zhenisbek Piyazov and Yulduz Rajabova.
The Mariinsky Theatre is run by Putin ally Valery Gergiev and since the beginning of the war on Ukraine, the organization has fired musicians for speaking out against the war. The theater has seen such prominent artists as Vittorio Grigolo, Ramon Vargas, and Ferrucio Furlanetto perform, breaking the Russian ban set by several institutions around the world.
