Verdi’s ‘Otello’ Arrives At Teatro Colón in Bogotá

By David Salazar

Verdi’s “Otello” is making a big stop at the Teatro Colón in Bogotá, Colombia this week.

The run, which kicks off on June 21, 2017 (incidentally the same exact day Jonas Kaufmann sings his first ever “Otello” in London at the Royal Opera House), will feature tenor Zoran Todorovich in the title role.

The tenor has toured the role over the last year, performing it in Antwerp and then taking it to Düsseldorf. He also performed it this past March in Zürich alongside Maria Agresta, Benjamin Bernheim and Marco Vratogna in a production by Graham Vick.

Soprano Gulnara Shafigullina will sing the role of Desdemona while Nikola Mijailovic will sing the villainous Iago. He has performed the role over the last few years, showing off his interpretation of the evildoer in Oslo, Hannover, Beijing, and Beograd.

This run will feature the production by Willy Decker that plays up some of the religious symbolist inherent in the opera. Hillary Griffiths will direct this iteration.

The production will run for five performances with subsequent showings on the 23rd of June, the 27th, the 29th and the first of July.
