Valley Opera & Performing Arts to Present Entirely-Virtual ‘Suor Angelica’

By Logan Martell

On March 20, 2021, California-based Valley Opera & Performing Arts, in collaboration with Opera San Luis Obispo and Mission Opera, will present a virtual production of Puccini’s “Suor Angelica,” via YouTube.

This production will be completely virtual, with each individual part being recorded in the artist’s home as they followed a piano accompaniment track and a video of Maestro Alhadeff conducting the respective part.

Audio engineer Geoffrey Pope then blended the 28 parts into a single track, with video editor Christina Bearce working to create the visual aspects of the production while tailoring the video to the music. No rehearsals took place for this production, either live or online.

Opera San Luis Obispo General and Artistic Director Brian Asher Alhadeff will conduct the VOPA Orchestra. The cast will feature soprano Shira Renee Thomas in the title role, as well as Jennifer Lindsay as Suor Genovieffa, and contralto Cindy Sadler as La Zia Principessa.
