Valentina Nafornița has withdrawn from her upcoming performances in “Die Fledermaus” at the Tokyo Spring Festival on April 18 and 20, 2025.

The soprano took to social media and said, “My dear friends and supporters, it is with a heavy heart that I must announce that I will no longer be singing Rosalinde in Tokyo in the coming weeks. This is a decision that I have given a great deal of thought to but, unfortunately, my doctors have advised that long distance travel is not wise at this point in the pregnancy and – for the sake of myself and both my babies – I am taking their advice.”

Nafornița added, “As many of you will know, pregnancy is a huge challenge for any body, and especially as an opera singer. I worked throughout my entire pregnancy with Leo and it was possible. Now, with two precious gifts growing inside me, the demands on my body are more than I could ever imagine, and it is so important that I listen to those around who know what is best to ensure that the three of us stay healthy and safe for the coming months. Of course, I am deeply disappointed that I cannot travel to my beloved Japan to sing Rosalinde – I have been preparing for months and was looking forward to it so much. I trust, though, that the universe will present an opportunity to return in the future, and I cannot wait for that day. Until then, I have still have many wonderful engagements in the coming months, and I look forward to sharing them with each and every one of you. Thank you for your unending love and support, and for your kindness in understanding this difficult decision. With love, always.”

As a result, Anita Hartig will perform in her place. Hartig is a Romanian soprano who has performed at the Metropolitan Opera, Wiener Staatsoper, and Romanian National Opera.

Hartig joins a cast that includes Adrian Elet, Sofia Fomina, Dovret Nurgeldieff, Markus Eiche, Angela Brower, and Tadahiro Masushima. Jonathan Nott conducts.
