Utah Symphony Appoints Matthew Straw as Associate Conductor
By Logan MartellUtah Symphony has announced the appointment of Matthew Straw as its new Assistant Conductor, beginning with the 2023-24 Season.
The appointment comes following a nationwide search, with Straw auditioning and interviewing with a panel of US musicians and staff members. Straw will succeed Benjamin Manis, who will complete his tenure as Associate Conductor and continue to appear as a guest conductor in the upcoming season.
Straw will work with Creative Partner David Robertson and Music Director Emeritus Thierry Fischer to lead many of the symphony’s education performances for elementary and secondary school students. He will also conduct select Deer Valley Music Festival, Film Series, and Family concerts, as well as cover for the orchestra’s Masterworks Series.
“From the first downbeat of my audition I was impressed by the quality of music-making and the spirit this orchestra brings to every note they play,” said Straw in an official press statement. “I’m thrilled to join the team and bring meaningful music to communities across the state of Utah!”
