On April 8, 2026, USC Thornton School of Music will present a special lecture by conductor James Conlon exploring how Shakespeare’s influence led Verdi to compose “Falstaff.”

Drawing on musical insight, historical context, and more than five decades on the podium, Conlon traces how a composer devoted almost entirely to serious drama returned late in life to a comic challenge that had once eluded him. The event combines lecture and listening session formats.

Conlon serves as Music Director of LA Opera through June 2026 and has conducted over 500 performances with the company. His previous posts include Principal Conductor of the Paris National Opera, Music Director of the Gürzenich Orchestra and Cologne Opera, and Music Director of the Ravinia Festival. His honors include four Grammy Awards, France’s Légion d’Honneur, and Austria’s Cross of Honor for Science and Art.

The lecture, which commences at 7 p.m. is free with registration.
