Unsettled Scores Teams Up With Other Companies to Present ‘Canoe’

By David Salazar

Unsettled Scores, Native Earth Performing Arts, The Toronto Consort, and Theatre Passe Muraille are teaming up to present “Canoe” on Sept. 12 – 16, 2023 at Trinity-St. Paul’s Centre in Toronto.

The opera tells the story of “two sisters from Northern Ontario, their ancestral tree, and an old, but familiar, visitor from the past. Through a minimalist aesthetic, this poignant work breaks free from Eurocentric operatic structures, creating an accessible and safe space for diverse audiences to experience the transformative power of Indigenous storytelling and opera.”

The opera by Spy Dénommé-Welch and Catherine Magowan will be directed by Moynan King and stars Conlin Delbaere-Sawchuk, Kristine Dandavino, Michelle Lafferty, and Nicole Joy-Fraser.

Dénommé-Welch and Magowan have worked together on such works as “Transpositions” (2022); “Rouge Winter” (2019); “RADAR” (2019); “Contraries: A Chamber Requiem” (2018); and “Sojourn” (2017).

The Sept. 12 and 13 performances will be preview shows with three official performances on the 15 and 16.
