University of Texas at Austin’s Butler School of Music Unveils 2023-24 Season
By David SalazarThe University of Texas at Austin’s Butler School of Music has unveiled its 2023-24 season. Here is a rundown of the vocal performances.
The season opens with a concert starring soprano Leah Crocetto. The showcase, which will be conducted by Douglas Kinney Frost, will include the world premiere of Clarice Assad’s “Baião n’ Blues,” Barber’s “Knoxville: Summer of 1915, and Brahms’ Fourth Symphony.
Performance Dates: Sept. 24, 2023
The Butler Opera Center will present a production of “La Bohème” as conducted by Douglas Kinney Frost and directed by Elio Bucky.
Performance Dates: Oct. 20-29, 2023
Next up is a program featuring UT Combined Choirs. The program, which includes Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms,” will be conducted by J.D. Burnett, Ke Yuan Hsin, and Gabriela Mora Fallas.
Performance Dates: Oct. 21, 2023
J.D. Burnett conducts a Concert Chorale that features music by Esmail, Bruckner, and Rautavaara, among others.
Performance Dates: Oct. 26, 2023
The “Songs Reimagined Series” will feature music by De Falla, Rachmaninoff, Ibert, and Mahler. Pianist Tamara Sanikidze will accompany such artists as Zurab Nikeuri, Hyein Hong, George Jiayi Baolin, and Aviana Burkepile, with Elio Bucky directing the program.
Performance Dates: Nov. 16, 2023
That will be followed by the premiere of Josíah Garza’s “Maria.” The opera will be presented with other opera scenes.
Performance Dates: Nov. 29 & 30, 2023
Minjeong Kim directs Tan Dun’s “Tea: A Mirror of Soul.” Douglas Kinney Frost conducts the New Music Ensemble.
Performance Dates: Feb. 22 – 25, 2024
Leah Crocetto and Tamar Sankidze present a program in honor of Women’s Month.
Performance Dates: March 19, 2024
J.D. Burnett conducts another “Concert Chorale” that showcases works by Choi, Runestad, and Elaine Hagenberg.
Performance Dates: April 5, 2024
Garnett Bruce directs “The Queen of Spades.” Douglas Kinney Frost conducts.
Performance Dates: April 19 – 28, 2024
The New Music Ensemble presents a program starring mezzo Page Stephens. The showcase includes music by Grantham and Anna Thorvaldsdottir.
Performance Dates: April 20, 2024
