Trinity Church Wall Street Announces Spring 2023 Music Season

Bach Trinity Church Wall Street has announced its spring music season.

This season is called “Light Persists,” which will focus on the themes of Lent and Easter. All concerts are free and offered in-person and online. This article will only feature classical voice numbers.

Caroline Shaw’s “To the Hands” opened the season in the Special Compline by Candlelight: Downtown Voices on Feb. 26. Stephen Sands conducted.

The Trinity Youth Chorus and Trinity Baroque Orchestra led by Melissa Attebury will present a Special Compline by Candlelight: Chorister Concert featuring Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s “Stabat Mater.” St. Paul’s Chapel will host the event starting at 8 pm.

Performance Date: Mar. 12, 2023

Starting off the “One series” is “Bach at One,” featuring the Choir of Trinity Wall Street and guest conductor Stefan Parkman. They will present works by Bach, Sandström, Rautavaara, and Ethel Smyth. This concert also marks the North American premiere of Ukrainian composer Anna Kuzina-Rozhdestvenskaya’s “Agnus Dei.” The concert will be held in St. Paul’s Chapel at 1 pm.

Performance Date: Mar. 15, 2023

St. Paul’s Chapel will host the second “Bach at One” concert. This concert will include “Herr, gehe nicht ins Gericht mit deinem Knecht,” BWV 105, and “Ach Herr, mich armen Sünder,” BWV 135, presented by the Choir of Trinity Wall Street, the Trinity Baroque Orchestra, and will be conducted by Avi Stein.

Performance Date: Mar. 22, 2023

The next “Bach at One” concert will feature soloists Margaret Carpenter Haigh, Brian Giebler, Clifton Massey, and Jonathan Woody, all of who are members of the choir. Avi Stein conducts the Trinity Baroque Orchestra.

Performance Date: Mar. 29, 2023

There will be a special Palm Sunday concert titled “Last Words.” The Choir of Trinity Wall Street, Downtown Voices, and NOVUS NY will offer works by Joel Thompson, Jane Hawes, Michael John Trotta, Richard Burchard, Franz Joseph Haydn, and J.S. Bach. Stephen Sands and Thomas McCargar conduct. This will be held at Trinity Church at 3 pm.

Performance Date: Apr. 2, 2023

April’s installation of “Bach at One” includes “Gloria in excelsis Deo,” BWV 191, “Nimm von uns, Herr, du treuer Gott,” BWV 101, conducted by Stein.

Performance Date: Apr. 19, 2023

The following day at 1 pm, “NOVUS at One” will take place featuring NOVUS NY String Quartet with mezzo-soprano soloist Melissa Attebury.

Performance Date: Apr. 20, 2023

The final “Bach at One” for the season will be a special concert curated by concertmaster Robert Mealy.

Performance Date: May 3, 2023

The Trinity Youth Chorus and Music Education Outreach Choirs will present the “Still I Rise Chorister Concert” conducted by Melissa Attebury. This event will be held at Trinity Church at 2 pm.

Performance Date: May 21, 2023

Bass-baritone Enrico Lagasca will headline the “Philippine Madrigal Singers: AAPI Celebration” led by Artistic Director and Choirmaster Mark Anthony A. Carpio. This will take place in St. Paul’s Chapel at 7 pm.

Performance Date: May 30, 2023

Selections from jazz and bluegrass masses by Carol Barnett, Bob Chilcott, and Mary Lou Williams will be heard in “Masses for the Soul” presented by the Choir of Trinity Wall Street, Downtown Voices,  Trinity Youth Chorus, and NOVUS NY.
