Tribeca New Music to Premiere ‘Elizabeth Frankenstein’
By Francisco SalazarOn Dec. 2, Tribeca New Music is set to premiere the Webcast Premiere of Edmund Cionek and Maryanne Bertollo’s “Elizabeth Frankenstein.”
The webcast, which will be available through Dec. 5, 2021, will showcase the 90-minute opera in a concert reading. The work is a re-imagining of the classic novel “Frankenstein” from the point of view of Victor’s wife.
“Frankenstein” was written in 1817 by Mary Shelley, an early feminist whose iconic work has historically focused on Victor’s lust for creation and the chaos which ensues. The new opera allows the novel’s foremost female character to step away from Victor’s shadow into her own light.
The concert reading will star soprano Natalie Ballenger as Elizabeth Frankenstein, tenor Blake Friedman as Victor Frankenstein, and bass-baritone Joseph Charles as Beutel. Gerald Steichen leads the musical performance with Beth Greenberg directing.
