Jonas Kaufmann, Jessica Pratt & Anita Rachvelishvili Lead Verdi & Donizetti Filled Weekend

This weekend, it’s all about new productions. From South America to Europe, three of Verdi’s greatest opera are getting new productions. Meanwhile, Saint-Saëns’ masterpiece is getting a rare performance while the Festival Donizetti is in full swing.

La Traviata – Teatro Municipal Enrique Buenaventura, Colombia

Federico Figueroa directs a new production of “La Traviata” in Cali starring Gabriela Mazuera and Gustavo Hernandez in the leading roles. Camilo Mendoza rounds out the leading cast as Germont while Monica Danilov is Flora and Hyalmar Mitrotti is Grenvil. Francisco Lequerica conducts the two performances.

Enrico di Borgogna & Il Castello di Kenilworth – Festival Donizetti, Italy

The Festival Donizetti is in full swing and as a result, it was hard to exclude either production currently being performed.

Anna Bonitatibus, Francesco Castoro, Sonia Ganassi, and Levy Sekgapane star in Silvia Paoli’s new production of Donizetti’s second opera. Alessandro De Marchi conducts the new production.

Jessica Pratt, Stefan Pop, and Carmela Remigio star in “Il Castello di Kenilworth,” the composer’s 1829 opera. Riccardo Frizza conducts the opera, which was the composer’s first Tudor opera. The work will be directed by Maria Pilar Pérez Aspa.

Otello – Bayerische Staatsoper, Germany

Jonas Kaufmann stars as Otello in his second run of Verdi’s masterpiece. Hailed by OperaWire as one of the great Otellos, Kaufmann will star alongside Anja Harteros and Gerald Finley in Amélie Niermeyer’s new production. Kirill Petrenko conducts.

Samson et Dalila – Opera de Monte Carlo, Monaco

Anita Rachvelishvili and Aleksandrs Antonenko star in Saint-Saëns’ epic piece in a production by Jean-Louis Grinda with costumes by Agostino Arrivabene.

Lucia di Lammermoor – Opera de Tenerife, Spain

Celso Albelo and Irina Lungu star in a new production of Donizetti’s masterpiece. The production by Nicola Berloffa also stars Andrei Kymach and  Mariano Buccino. Christopher Franklin conducts.

Rigoletto – Royal Swedish Opera, Sweden

Leonardo Capalbo stars in a new production of Rigoletto with conductor Lionel Bringuier. Sofia Jupither directs while Karl-Magnus Fredriksson, Ida Falk Winland, and John Erik Eleby also star. The production heads to cinemas on Dec. 1, 2018.
