Top 6 Operas To See This Weekend (1/4-6)
The Metropolitan Opera & Beth Morris Projects Dominate
By David SalazarAfter the holidays, it is unsurprising that few opera companies will be in action. Yet there are still a few that are willing to bet on audiences wanting opera right away after the break.
Metropolitan Opera
The company that never sleeps, literally never stopped performing throughout the holidays, continuing its offerings the night and day after Christmas and showcasing its big New Year’s opera. For those unable to attend the big premiere of “Adriana Lecouvreur” right before the calendar shifted from 2018 to 2019, the opportunity beckons on Friday Jan. 4 with the second performance of the hit show that stars Anna Netrebko, Anita Rachvelishvili and Piotr Beczala.
Those looking for a weekend dose of the Met that isn’t music from Cilea can find comfort in “The Magic Flute” and “Otello” on Saturday.
Beth Morrison Projects
Countering the Met’s programming will be the company that continually finds new repertory to add. The company is putting on three different operas. New for the weekend are “Train With No Midnight” and “4:48 Psychosis,” which get their first performances of the season on Saturday; a second show takes place on Sunday. The company will also showcase “Prism” on Sunday.
