Lots of Mozart This Weekend

There is a lot more standard repertory this weekend on offer around the United States. So here is a look at the performances to check out (in alphabetical order by company). 

Così Fan Tutte – Canadian Opera Company

Mozart and Da Ponte’s opera will get a performance on Feb. 9 and will feature a cast that includes Kirsten McKinnon, Emily D’Angelo, JOhannes Kammler, Ben Bliss, Tracy Dahl, and Russell Braun. Bernard Labadie will conduct a production directed by Atom Egoyan. 

Moby Dick – Opera San José

Jake Heggie and Gene Scheer’s famed opera will get performances on Feb. 9 and 10 with a cast that includes Richard Cox, Noah Stewart, Justin Ryan, Ashraf Sewailam, Jasmine Habersham, Trevor Neal, Mason Gates, Eugene Brancoveanu, and Babatunde Akinboboye. This is an another opera by Heggie that is starting to gain momentum around the States and is undeniably one to take in when given a chance. 

Elektra – Lyric Opera of Chicago

Nina Stemme stars in Strauss’ famed opera with a cast that includes Elza van den Heever, Michaela Martens, Robert Brubaker, and Iain Paterson. Donald Runnicles conducts the production originally directed by Sir David McVicar. The Sunday showcase is the third performance of the work out of a total of six.

Rigoletto – San Diego Opera

On Friday and Sunday, audiences will get a chance to see the final two performances of Verdi’s “Rigoletto.” The production stars Stephen Powell, Alisa Jordheim, and Scott Quinn and is conducted by Steven White. 

The Marriage of Figaro – Florida Grand Opera 

Mozart’s other Da Ponte masterpiece will be featured in its final performance in Florida with a cast that includes Jonathan Michie, Lyubov Petrova, Calvin Griffin, Elena Galván, and Rafael Porto, among others. Andrew Bisantz conducts.
