Top 5 Operas to See This Weekend – North America (11/30-12/2)

Beth Morrison & LA Opera Team Up In a Big Way

By David Salazar

When the calendar turns to December, opera starts to wind down a bit. But no worries, there are still plenty of works to enjoy this weekend in North America.

Prism – LA Opera / Beth Morrison Projects

Seeing Beth Morrison Projects, one of opera’s most innovative companies teaming up with a big name like the LA Opera is always a breath of fresh air. It speaks volumes about opera’s health and potential. Performances run throughout the weekend at the REDCAT.

Don Giovanni – Manitoba Opera

North of the border we see the final performance of Mozart and Da Ponte’s classic gem “Don Giovanni.” It’s a fantastic cast that includes Daniel Okulitch in the title role and he will be joined by Jessica Strong, Owen McCausland, and Monica Huisman. The final show is on Friday.

Messiah – New Amsterdam Opera

As the holiday season gets underway it won’t be much of a surprise to see two pieces start cropping up more and more – Handel’s “Messiah” and “Amahl and the Night Visitors.” The “Messiah” is not an opera but does feature great singing overall and on Sunday afternoon at the Nave at The Riverside Church, one of the most exciting companies in New York’s opera scene, led by Keith Chambers, will take on the famed masterwork.

Venus And Adonis & Savitri – New Camerata Opera

One of New York’s most exciting companies pairs with up and coming director Jennifer Williams for this rare double bill on Saturday and Sunday. New Camerata’s profile has rapidly grown in just a few years and this company is likely to be one talked about for years to come. Definitely, one to keep an eye on.

Pagliacci – Opera San Jose

Opera San Jose finishes off a run of Leoncavallo’s masterpiece with performances on Friday and Sunday. Anthony Clark Evans leads a solid cast that includes Cooper Nolan, Mason Gates, Emmett O’Hanlon and Maria Natale.
