Here’s a look at the operas to see this weekend around Europe.

The Queen of Spades – Salzburg Festival, Austria 

The highly anticipated new production of Tchaikovsky’s masterwork opens with Brandon Jovanovich singing the lead and Evgenia Muraveva as Liza. Oksana Volkova, Hanna Schwarz, Igor Golovatenko, and Vladislav Sulimsky also star in Hans Neuenfels’ production. Mariss Jansons conducts.

Carmen – Bregenz Festival, Austria 

Bizet’s masterpiece continues its run at the Bregenz festival in Kasper Holten’s inventive production starring three mezzo-sopranos this weekend. Gaëlle Arquez, Lena Belkina, and Annalisa Stroppa share the title role with Antonino Fogliani and Jordan de Souza alternating at the pit.

Il Barbiere di Siviglia – Arena di Verona, Italy 

Nino Machaidze takes on the role of Rosina in Rossini’s comic gem alongside Dmitry Korchak as Count Almaviva and Leo Nucci in the title role. Ferruccio Furlanetto rounds out the cast with Daniel Oren conducting Hugo de Ana’s production.

Rindaldo – Festival Castell Peralada, Spain

Xavier Sabata sings the title role in Handel’s ever-popular work alongside Núria Rial, Hillary Summers, Mary-Ellen Nesi, Juan Sancho, and Josep Ramón Olive. Dani Epasa conducts the concert version.

Vanessa – Glyndebourne, United Kingdom

Barber’s epic thriller gets a new production by Keith Warner with Emma Bell taking on the title role in her role debut. They are joined by Rosalind Plowright, Virginie Verrez, and Edgaras Montvida. Jakub Hrůša conducts the production.
