Top 5 Operas to See This Weekend – International (3/29-31)

This weekend is an interesting one as there are numerous new productions, rare operas, and one world premiere. There are also some role debuts and one production that will begin its international run. Here is a look at what we have picked as must-sees!

Orest – Wiener Staatsoper, Austria

Manfred Trojahn’s opera gets a new production in Vienna with an exceptional cast headlined by Thomas Johannes Mayer in the title role, Evelyn Herlitzius in yet another take on Elektra, Thomas Ebenstein as Menelaos, Daniel Johansson as Apollo/Dionysos, Audrey Luna as Hermione, and Laura Aikin as Helena.

The premiere on March 31 will be conducted by  Michael Boder and Marco Arturo Marelli.

La Juive – Opera Vlaanderen, Belgium

Corinne Winters continues run of Halevy’s acclaimed opera. The opera also stars rising star tenor Enea Scala, Nicole Chevalier, and  Riccardo Zanellato. Peter Konwitschny directs the production with Antonino Fogliani conducting.

Lakmé – Royal Opera Muscat, Oman

Elena Mosuc brings her acclaimed coloratura soprano to one of the most iconic roles in opera. In her role debut, the soprano sings Davide Livermore’s new production, which is set to make numerous international stops in the next seasons.

Jordi Bernàcer conducts the production, which also stars Sergey Romanovsky and Raffaella Lupinacci. For more on the “Lakmé,” production check out our interview with Elena Mosuc.

Manon Lescaut – Teatro alla Scala, Italy

Maria José Siri brings her acclaimed interpretation of Puccini’s heroine to a new production at La Scala which includes the original version of the opera. The soprano is joined by Marcelo Alvarez and Massimo Cavalletti. David Pountney directs the new production with Riccardo Chailly conducting.

The premiere on March 31 will be live broadcast on RAI-Radio3 and a recorded performance will be broadcast on April 11 on Rai5 Tv.

 Jack the Ripper: The Women of Whitechapel – English National Opera, United Kingdom

The weekend brings the world premiere of Iain Bell’s latest opera. The production brings legendary soprano Josephine Barstow, Janis Kelly, and Susan Bullock to the stage alongside Alan Opie, Nicky Spence, and Natlaya Romaniw.

Martyn Brabbins conducts Daniel Kramer’s production. The opera makes it world premiere on March 30 and we have an interview with the composer and librettist. Check out right here!
