Tomasz Konieczny Leads Dutch National Opera’s ‘Boris Godunov’

By Francisco Salazar

The Dutch National Opera is set to present “Boris Godunov” in a new production by Kirill Serebrennikov.

In his new staging, Serebrennikov is tackling a work that means a great deal to him. Drawing on the photography of Markov, Serebrennikov shows a cross-section of a block of flats typical of the ones built en masse during the Soviet period. There is a television screen in each apartment, through which the people are fed carefully curated propaganda and their attitude to politics is one of deadened apathy: their lives continue regardless.

Vasily Petrenko conducts the production, which will star Tomasz Konieczny in his role and house debut as Boris Godunov. He will be joined by Raehann Bryce-Davis, Dmitry Ulyanov, Najmiddin Mavlyanov, and Inna Demenkova.

“Boris Godunov” will be performed seven times between June 10 and 29, 2025.
