The Tokyo Symphony Orchestra has announced the extension of  Lorenzo Viotti as Music Director through March 2034.

In 2026, Viotti became the new Music Director of Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, 12 years after his sensational debut in 2014.

In a statement, Yoshitaka Hirooka, Managing Director of the Tokyo Symphony said, “By working together over the long term, we aim to establish a strong and lasting musical foundation, while further enriching the orchestra’s artistic expression through greater breadth and diversity of sound. At the same time, we feel a profound sense of responsibility in sharing with Maestro Viotti an important period in his development as an artist, as he moves from his late thirties into his early forties. Over the next eight years, we are committed to nurturing the partnership between Viotti and the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra into a distinctive musical brand of which we can be proud on the world stage.”

Viotti added, “I am deeply happy and grateful to continue this journey with the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra for another five years. From the very beginning, I have felt something truly special with this orchestra. The extraordinary commitment, curiosity, generosity and passion of the musicians, together with the dedication and support of the entire staff, make every project a deeply inspiring experience. This season, Viotti will begin his season with the orchestra conducting a program that includes works by Suppé, Mozart, and Schubert. He is also set to conduct Schmidt’s Oratorio “The Book with Seven Seals.”
