The Staatsoper unter der Linden has announced that Dutch baritone Thomas Oliemans will perform the role of Peter in Humperdinck’s “Hänsel und Gretel” on Jan. 7, 2021.

Oliemans will replace German baritone Roman Trekel.

Oliemans will join a cast that includes Michaela Schuster in the role of Gertrud, Stephan Rügamer as the Wicked Witch, Natalia Skrycka in the role of Hänsel, and Adriane Queiroz as Gretel. The cast will also include Aytaj Shikhalizada and Liubov Medvedeva. Thomas Guggeis will conduct the production by Achim Freyer.

Oliemans recently performed the role of Schaunard in Puccini’s “La bohème,” Don Alfonso in Mozart’s “Così fan tutte,” Papageno in “Die Zauberflöte” at De Nationale Opera in Amsterdam, Mr. Redburn in Britten’s “Billy Budd” at the Royal Opera House and Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, and the title role in Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” at the English National Opera, among others.

The baritone is slated to appear in the role of Count Danilo Danilowitsch in Lehár’s operetta “Die Lustige Witwe” at De Nationale Opera in April and May 2021.
