By Francisco Salazar

The Théâtre des Champs-Elysées has announced that the Dec. 5, 2019 performance of Mozart’s “Le Nozze di Figaro” has been canceled.

The theater announced that some of the permanent staff and intermittents decided to join the social movement of Thursday, exercising their right to strike. As a result the performance cannot take place.

The upcoming strike in Paris has been called the biggest in years as nationwide strike has been called to protest against President Emmanuel Macron’s recent pension cuts and austerity measures. According to various polls 70 percent of the population expects strikes will continue after December 5 and 69 percent support the strike.

The Paris strikes are the latest in a broad international resurgence of class struggle, with mass protests driven by anger at social inequality in Algeria, Catalonia, Colombia, Chile, Lebanon, Iraq, and Hong Kong.

“Le Nozze di Figaro” is set to return for its final performance on Dec. 7, 2019.
