The Theater St. Gallen is set to present Kris Defoort and Peter van Kraaij’s “The Time of Our Singing.”

The opera, which will premiere on March 11, 2023, is set to run through April 23, 2023, for a total of six performances.

It will star Claron McFadden, Mark S. Doss, Kristján Jóhannesson, Joshua Stewart, Naomi Simmonds, Markel Reed, Jennifer Panara, Kunal Lahiry, and Hervé Loka. Kwamé Ryan conducts while Ted Huffman directs.

“The Time of Our Singing” is based on Richard Powers’ novel and, “tells the story of the life of a family with a black mother and a white father against the background of racial segregation in post-war America. She interweaves personal experiences with historical events whose themes show clear parallels with the recent history of the USA: Black Lives Matter, police brutality, and rigged elections accompany the siblings Jonah, Joey, and Ruth Storm on their journey through life.”

This production is co-produced with La Monnaie / De Munt, where it opened last year; Huffman won an Opera Award for best premiere for that series of performances.
