Theater Koblenz Names New Chief Conductor
By Francisco SalazarMarcus Merkel has been named Chief Conductor of Germany’s Theater Koblenz starting the 2022-23 season.
The theater revealed that the conductor will take up the position until the 2024-25 season and will be involved in close coordination with Opera Director Anja Nicklich.
He will introduce himself to the Koblenz public in a new production of Richard Wagner’s “Parsifal” this season in April.
Born in 1991, Merkel is currently the Kapellmeister at the Oper Graz and is also a pianist, singer, and composer. He has won several competitions including the German Federal Competition for Composition and the student composition competition of the Berliner Philharmoniker. He is also the founder and Artistic Director the Young Philharmonie Berlin.
The Theater Koblenz recently opened a new production of “Die Zauberflote” and is set to present productions of “Dead Man Walking,” “Cosi fan tutte,” and “Rigoletto,” among others.
